1. Emptiness (Ma / Mu )

• Ma (間): This is the "space between." It represents the pause in music, the silence in a conversation, or the white space in a painting. In Japan, the space around an object is as important as the object itself because it allows the object to "breathe" and exist.

• Mu (無): Derived from Zen Buddhism, this refers to "nothingness" or "non-being." It is seen as a source of all potential—a clean slate where everything begins and ends.

2. Shadow (In / Kage )

• The Praise of Shadows: Jun'ichirō Tanizaki’s famous essay, In'ei Raisan, argues that Japanese beauty is found not in clarity, but in the layers of shadow. While Western culture often seeks to eliminate shadows with bright light, Japanese aesthetics embrace them to create mystery and depth.

3. The Connection: The Art of Absence

The link between shadow and emptiness is the rejection of the obvious.

• Depth through Mystery: Both concepts rely on what is not there. Emptiness provides the room, and shadow provides the mood. Together, they force the observer to use their imagination.
